History of Casablanca

Casablanca is a city located in northwestern Morocco on the Atlantic Ocean. The city has a rich history dating back to the 7th century BC.

The name Casablanca is derived from the Spanish word for white house, due to the city's white-washed buildings. Casablanca was founded by the Berber tribe of the Arawaks. The city later became a Phoenician trading port before being conquered by the Romans in the 2nd century AD.

The city was then ruled by the Vandals and the Byzantines before being conquered by the Arabs in the 8th century. The city changed hands several times between the Arabs and the Portuguese before being taken by the Moroccans in the 16th century. Casablanca remained under Moroccan rule until it was conquered by the French in the 19th century. The city was then made into a protectorate by the French.

Casablanca became an important city during World War II, as it was the site of the Casablanca Conference in 1943. The city was also the site of the Battle of Casablanca in 1944. After the war, the city was made into an autonomous region by the French. Casablanca gained its independence from France in 1956.
